Chapter 22

As Jack departed, the atmosphere in the bakery shifted from charged anticipation to a more contemplative quiet.

“Gram, is there anything else we can do to help?”

“Not a thing,” she smiled. “Why don’t you two girls run off and have a little fun.”

I smiled to myself. Sadie and I were both young professionals, but a grandmother’s habit is hard to break.

“I’ve had just about all the fun I can handle for a day,” I said.

“Agreed,” Sadie offered. “I’m ready to walk home and catch up on some real housewives.”

“Where do you live?”

“Actually, pretty close to you. I’m renting a house up near the university, so we’re probably headed the same way.”

I was ready. “Let’s go. I could use some fresh air, and I feel like I’m on the verge of... something.”

As we stepped out into the cool evening, the quiet streets of Enchanted Springs offered a stark contrast to the day’s earlier hustle and bustle.

We made our way to Main Street and headed north.

As Sadie and I walked, I couldn’t help noticing that every shop we passed had a poster in the window advertising the Founders Festival. Matching banners had been hung from the old-fashioned streetlights that lined the sidewalks. At every intersection, banners were strung across the street, fluttering gently in the breeze. “The Past Is Present,” they read. “Celebrate With Us.”

The path we took meandered along Main Street before edging towards the more scholarly environs near Magnolia University. The scent of blooming magnolias lingered in the air, a gentle reminder of the town’s Southern charm and history.

As we walked, the conversation flowed from the practicalities of spellcasting to the philosophical implications of time travel. Sadie’s insights into historical witchcraft illuminated paths I hadn’t considered, offering new perspectives on the mysteries we were unraveling.

“I keep thinking about my time shift at the hotel, when I had a glimpse of Colette before she disappeared. It was like looking through a keyhole, into another world. But it wasn’t enough. I need to see more, understand more.”

“You obviously know more about magic than I do.”

“I’ve known about it for a while, but I already feel like you’ve experienced more than me.”

“What do you mean?”

We reached a stretch of road bordered by the ancient oaks of Magnolia University, their branches a canopy under the starlit sky. The university’s presence, with its storied buildings and the whispers of countless scholars who’d walked its paths, seemed to echo our quest for knowledge and truth.

“Well, your gift for photography is unveiling new worlds I’ve only read about in books. And your travels through time? That’s something I can only dream of.” A wistful smile played across her lips as she explained.

“I’m a spellcaster, not a temporal witch. My magic is rooted in the here and now. It’s influenced by the past, sure, but I can’t step into it like you can.”

“That must be frustrating, especially with your love for history,” I said, genuinely sympathizing with her plight.

“Tell me about it,” she laughed. “I’m not complaining, though. I think I make the most of what I have.
